Abstract

In this paper, the existing design of two types of industrial clarifiers has been analyzed using the finite element method. The existing frame type construction was replaced by a plate construction, which is advantageous since it results in substantial savings in weight while maintaining comparable strength and rigidity. A parametric study has been done for different size of clarifiers in the operating range and the feasibility of the plate construction examined. In all the cases, both the stresses and displacements in the elements were checked and verified to be within acceptable limits. The procedure outlined is user-friendly and ideally suited for a PC environment.
