Abstract
Active methylene compounds undergo smooth addition to quinolines and isoquinolines activated by chloroformate in the presence of CeCl3·7H2O/NaI to afford 2-alkyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline and 1-alkyl-1,2-dihydroisoquinoline, respectively in excellent yields with high selectivity.
