Abstract

We have prepared single phase alloys of composition Y0.8U0.2Pd3Bx upto x = 0.5. The alloys containing boron have the cubic structure like that of Y0.8U0.2Pd3 but have a larger lattice parameter that varies with boron concentration up to x~0.3. Most likely the boron goes in interstitially and occupies the body-centered position of the cubic unit cell. The temperature dependence of the resistivity and low-temperature specific heat of the alloys containing boron are markedly different from that of the parent material Y0.8U0.2Pd3 and do not show any signature of the two-channel quadrupolar Kondo effect. The results imply a drastic reduction of the Kondo temperature due to the lattice expansion by boron.
