Two new types of pressure-gradient driven instabilities in accelerating plasmas are presented. One is an electrostatic instability which has a growth rate (k · g/2)1/2, where k is the wavevector, and g is the acceleration; the other is a purely growing magnetic instability of the interchange type having a characteristic growth rate which can be larger than the classical value (Kg)1/2, where K−1 is the density gradient scalelength. Our results seem to be in good qualitative agreement with experimental observations.
