Abstract

The dynamics of a fifteen layer thick semi-infinite slab having the NaCl structure with the free surfaces normal to the [110] direction has been investigated. The slab is found to be unstable towards the lowest lying acoustic modes for a range of wave vectors along [10] and [01] directions in the Brillouin zone. A similar behaviour was observed earlier in a slab having the CsCl structure with (110) free surfaces. On the other hand the NaCl slab with free (100) surfaces is stable. The instability in the present case is perhaps due to the smaller coordination of the surface ion as compared to the ion on the free (100) surface.
