Abstract

Expressions for the third order elastic constants of cubic crystals are derived by the method of long waves. Using the pseudopotential formulated by Sinha (1966) to fit the phonon dispersion relations of copper, the third order elastic constants of copper are calculated. These calculated third order elastic constants are compared with the experimental values of Hiki and Granato (1966) and Salama and Alers (1967). The agreement between theory and the experimental results of Hiki and Granato is fairly good.
