Abstract

Employment of sample concentration techniques is associated with the potential risk of transmission of tuberculosis among laboratory workers. The inactivating properties of several agents for samples containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis were investigated. Sputum concentration using Universal Sample Processing solution with 5% phenol provided laboratory safety without compromising the performance of smear microscopy.
