Abstract

Temperature and field dependence of the critical current density (Jc) and upper critical field (Hc2) in epitaxial Y2Ba4Cu8O16 films are reported. Jc (T,H) data are in excellent agreement with a model of thermally activated flux motion in type-II superconductors. The pinning potential varies from 283 to 125 meV for zero to 40 KG fields and the pre-exponential frequency is in the GHz range. A critical comparison of our data with reports on YBa2Cu3O7 indicates that the flux line lattice is more dynamic in Y2Ba4Cu8O16. The anisotropy in the Ginsberg-Landau coherence length deduced from the slope of the Hc2 phase boundary is comparable to that in YBa2Cu3O7.
