Abstract

The cytotoxic activity of gamma irradiated sucrose solution (5%) was found to inhibit significantly the eight-day growth of roots and shoots of barley seedlings and also induce chromosomal aberrations in the root tip cells of Vicia faba. Irradiated water exhibited little or no such cytotoxic activity, presumably due to the lack of formation of long-lived radiolytic derivatives of biological consequence. The potency of the induced cytotoxic activity in the irradiated sucrose solution diminished with increasing length of storage.
