Abstract

A new model for abrasive wear has been proposed in this paper. This model assumes that the localization of deformation in the near-surface regions underneath the abrasive grains is responsible for chip formation and hence wear. It is shown that the above criterion for chip formation can be transformed to a critical strain criterion and thus an appropriate expression for the abrasive wear resistance can be obtained. This expression clearly indicates the relative influence of the various mechanical and thermophysical properties of a material on its abrasive wear resistance. It is also demonstrated that the model predicts quite well all the essential features characteristic of two-body abrasive wear.
