Abstract

Closed-form analytic expressions for the displacements and stresses due to a point displacement dislocation located at an arbitrary point of a two-phase medium consisting of two homogeneous, isotropic, perfectly elastic half-spaces in welded contact are obtained. These expressions are valid for arbitrary values of the Poisson's ratio of the two media and for arbitrary observer locations. The effect of the Poisson's ratio on the deformation field due to a vertical strike-slip fault is examined. It is found that a change in the Poisson's ratio may change the deformation field significantly, especially near the source. Similarly, a change in the ratio of the rigidities of the two half-spaces may change the deformation field substantially. The variation of the displacements and stresses with the epicentral distance as well as with distance from the interface is studied. Papkovich-Neuber displacement potentials and displacements for various nuclei of strain placed in the two-phase medium are given in the Appendix. The corresponding stresses can be obtained by differentiation.
