Abstract

Direct excitation (300 nm) of phenyl seleno and phenyl telluro benzoate in n-hexane, methanol, and silica gel matrices results in the formation of products because of dimerization of PhSe/PhTe radicals, and 1,3-migration of the PhTe radical. Reactivity of the photogenerated radicals formed as a result of cleavage of the ---CO---X---bond is markedly influenced by the diffusion characteristics of the radicals and the nature of group X.
