Abstract

In five species of Arachis, the amount, nature and distribution of repetitive DNA was compared. Repeated DNA varied from 59.0 to 73.5% in the species studied. In the diploid species Arachis regonii and Arachis villosulicarpa) the amount of highly repetitive DNA was twice as much as was observed in the tetraploid species (Arachis hypogaea, Arachis glabrata and Arachis hagenbeckii). The present comparison suggests that highly repeated DNA elements have selectively been diminished in the tetraploids during speciation in Arachis.
