Abstract

The isomeric shift, δ, in the mossbauer resonance curve when referred to a standard source is shown to be linearly dependent on the ionic character of the absorber in simple cases such as the aurous halides. In ferrous and ferric salts, where complications occur due to d-s and s-p overlap, the linear relation no longer holds. The plot between δ and the ionic character of the absorber salt as determined from Pauling's formulation has been used to determine the degree of covalency in iron-doped BaTiO3. The value thus determined agrees well with that inferred theoretically.
