Abstract

The inequivalent quantizations of a physical system with a general configuration space Q are studied, with particular emphasis on the case when π1(Q) is nonabelian. The necessary generaliztions of the state space and the set of observables are given. Possible realizations of this scenario in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are outlined.
