Abstract

RE-Co-Fe system, RE representing the total rare earth content in misch metal, has been reinvestigated at 900 ° C in the composition region between the 2:17 and 2:7 phase regions and iron content between 10 and 20 at.%. Metallography, X-ray and thermomagnetic analysis of alloys has established the existence of a new ternary intermediate phase L very close to the S phase region. Using the available data and the results of the present investigation, a modified 900 ° C isothermal section has been drawn. The L phase has a Curie temperature of about 800 ° C and the diffraction pattern of the L phase could be indexed on the basis of a hexagonal unit cell with lattice parameters a0 =8.459 Å , Co = 41.935 Å and Co/ao = 4.96.
