Abstract

The effect of solid solution on the thermal dissociation of zircon was investigated in the temperature range 1500-6680° C. HfSiO4 additions enhance the stability of zircon and additions of ThSiO4 and YPO4 aid the dissociation of zircon. It is suggested that substitution of Zr by a smaller cation inhibits dissociation while larger cations increase dissociation.
