Abstract

Intense acoustic emission signals were detected at and below 450° C as a superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-x ceramic was cooled in air from 800° C. This is attributed to oxygen ion ordering at the orthorhombic I to II transition. This corroborates the reported abrupt changes in Tc from 60 to 90 K as YBa2Cu3O7-x is annealed at 400° C after quenching from 600° C. No acoustic emission signals were detected during heating from 25° C to 800° C and during cooling from 800° C down to 450° C.
