Abstract

Rubidium nitrate exists in four polymorphic forms in the solid state, three of which (IV, III, and I) have been well characterized. Data are presented, from dilatometric and X-ray studies, to confirm a rhombohedral symmetry for phase II rather than the tetragonal, suggested by Brown and McLaren (1962). The mechanism of structural changes, at the III → II → I phase transitions, is described.
