Abstract

Sodium β and β " alumina, with and without MgO doping, have been synthesized from Na2CO3, α Al2O3 and MgO. Experimental problems, such as segregation, have been emphasized. β Al2O3, with and without MgO, once formed is stable at least up to 1700° C. β " Al2O3 decomposes at 1450° C, whereas MgO-stabilized β " Al2O3 is stable at 1450° C but not at 1650° C.
