Abstract

We report the observation of unexpected low frequency (10cm−1 - 70cm−1) features in the Raman spectra of germanium. The frequencies of these modes depend upon the excitation wavelength of the laser. We propose that these features are due to scattering by two acoustic phonons of large wave vectors resonant at the E1 and E1 + Δ1 gaps. This provides a method of determining the reduced masses of the E1 and E1 + Δ1 critical points.
