Abstract

1. 1. The tender kernels of B. flabellifer contain free sugars, namely, sucrose (0.38%), fructose (1.46%), and glucose (3.21%). 2. 2. Besides the free sugars, the kernel contains polysaccharides, of which the major polysaccharide has been characterized as a galactomannan. 3. 3. The purified polysaccharide on hydrolysis yielded, on a moisturefree basis, 27.64% D-galactose and 78.32% D-mannose. 4. 4. The presence in the kernel of an insoluble fibrous material probably a type of mannose-cellulose has been indicated.
