Abstract

A systematic investigation of the effect of oxygen pressure during annealing and of varying Sr content on the structural and superconducting properties of La2-xSrxCaCu2O6 has been carried out. To get the highest Tc of 60 K, the required annealing pressure was 200 bar of oxygen at 970° C. This Tc=60 K sample has FACV ~2.17 and an oxygen content of 6.02-6.05 per formula unit. Although many variations in the preparation conditions were tried, the 60 K superconductor was always found to be associated with an impurity phase La(8-xSrxCu8O20. The amount of this impurity phase increased with increasing Sr content and with increasing oxygen pressure.
