Abstract
Steric versus acidity-controlled change during lactonisation of monosubstituted maleic anhydride-cyclopentadiene adducts has been studied to eliminate some confusion in the literature arising from the use of limited information. The transannular lactonisation of proximately aligned, yet dissymmetric, dicarboxylic acid is controlled under acidic conditions by bulk effects and under basic conditions by pKa, effects.
