Abstract

The performance of a capillary compensated hydrostatic journal bearing is analyzed by finite element method. Non-dimensional load carrying capacity, flow, and pocket pressures are presented for various bearing design parameters, and eccentricity ratios. Load capacity varies significantly with changes in these parameters. Bearing flow for any eccentricity is obtained by summing up the boundary nodal flows and it is not necessary to use approximate expressions [1,2] for the axial and circumferential flows which are valid only for small eccentricity ratios and small circumferential land widths.
