Abstract

The momentum and continuity equations of the flow field for newtonian lubricants in the clearance space of a hydrodynamic journal bearing with skewed axes are expressed in cylindrical coordinates. The solution for non-newtonian lubricants is obtained by the finite element method using Galerkin's technique and a direct iteration scheme. Dynamic performance characteristics were obtained for hydrodynamic journal bearings using both newtonian and non-newtonian lubricants in which the journal and bearing axes were skewed.
