Abstract

Fenitrothion or its hydrolysis product, 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol was applied thrice to three soils under flooded or nonflooded conditions at 15-day intervals. After third application, suspensions of treated and untreated soils were tested for their ability to degrade fenitrothion or 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol added to a mineral salts medium. Repeated additions of fenitrothion or 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol conditioned the three soils for accelerated hydrolysis of fenitrothion, but depending on soil type, moisture regime and the applied substrate (fenitrothion or 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol). Some enrichment cultures degraded fenitrothion past 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol to nitrite.
