Abstract

The effects of a nonuniform temperature gradient and a uniform transverse magnetic field on the linear stability of a horizontal layer of a conducting liquid at rest is studied. The temperature profile that gives the maximum critical Marangoni number is determined. A single-term Galerkin expansion procedure is used which gives reasonable results with minimum mathematics.
