Abstract

By explicit construction of solutions in gauges satisfying the Lorentz condition we give an operator realization of the dynamically broken Patrascioiu phase in QCD(N)2 for massless quarks. The SU(N) colour gauge group is reduced to its maximal abelian subgroup. The N-1 diagonal gluons become massive and there is a massless free U(1) current. The contrast with the 't Hooft phase, established by the 1/N method, supports the idea of two distinct phases.
