Abstract

Extraction of COS, dissolved in n-heptane, into aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide was studied in a 5 cm i.d. stirred cell. Extraction of COS is accompanied by fast reaction in the diffusion film. The role of phase transfer catalysts (PTC) in this uncommon example of industrial importance was studied by using tricaprylmethyl ammonium chloride (Aliquat-336), tetrabutyl ammonium chloride and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide as PTC. The specific rates of extraction were found to be first order in dissolved COS concentration and first order with respect to the PTC concentration in the organic phase. The maximum enhancement in the specific rate of extraction was found to be as high as about 25.
