Abstract

Regular ionospheric soundings close to the magnetic equator in India were started in October 1964 with the installation of a C4 ionosonde at Thumba (magnetic latitude 0.3° S). Soundings were made once every hour during the first 2 years, but have been more frequent, and once every 15 min since January 1967. These more frequent ionograms reveal some transient phenomena which seem to be peculiar to the equatorial ionosphere, and this report describes a new type of vertically moving disturbance.
