Abstract

Valence-band photoemission from the 4f shell confirms the divalent nature of Eu in EuPd2P2, while photoemission from the 3d deep core level results in both divalent and trivalent spectral features. The Eu3+ components, with about 15% intensity in the Eu 3d spectrum, are thus caused by final-state shake-up effects. Their existence is in agreement with the theoretical predictions of Delley and Beck, and they offer strong support for the recent interpretation of the LIII-edge spectrum of this compound.
