Abstract

Experiments are described which measure the fraction of the current carried by the ionic species in presence of a temperature gradient. This is less than Hittorf's transport number. The results are interpreted in terms of linear relations between fluxes and forces. It is pointed out that the sign of the difference between apparent transport number and the true one depends on the sign of the soret coefficient.
