Abstract

The thermoosmotic concentration difference for a gaseous mixture of ethylene and carbon dioxide across unglazed porcelain has been measured by an interferometric technique. Separations of the order of 1 x 10−3 per degree were obtained. The results have been examined from the viewpoint of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Heats of transport of the components in the mixtures have been evaluated from the observed data. These differ from the corresponding values for pure components both in sign and in magnitude.
