Abstract

We study some properties of rational conformal field theories for which the action of the modular group on the characters generates a finite group. We show that this property is suggested by the fact that the characters have an expansion in powers of q=e2π/τ with integral coefficients. We also discuss how such theories may be classified by studying the set of all finite groups which have representations of a given dimension.
