Abstract

The various parameters pertaining to the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PL) effect such as the vacancy concentration-strain exponent, the aging time, the mobile dislocation density-strain exponent, the activation energy, the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress and the activation volume have been evaluated for the strip-cast Al---1Mn---1Mg alloy in the as-cast and precipitation-treated conditions. The results support the static strain-aging model of the PL effect. While magnesium atoms are responsible for the serrated flow in the alloy, the manganese atoms in solid solution retard the kinetics of dynamic strain aging and appear to be the rate-controlling obstacles in the cast condition.
