Abstract

The K-conversion coefficient of the 279 keV gamma-ray following the beta-decay of Hg203 has been measured by comparing the X-ray and gamma-ray intensities in a scintillation spectrometer. The measured value of αK=0.195±0.014 indicates that the transition is M1 with E2 mixed to the extent of 63%. Our value is considerably higher than the magnetic beta spectrometer determinations, but is in agreement with the results of Johansson using the scintillation method.
