Abstract

New statistical formulae, which make use of the probability distribution function for the normalised structure amplitude, have been developed and are shown to be very efficient in distinguishing between centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric structures. The effect of the presence of one and two heavy atoms in the unit cell on these distribution functions is discussed theoretically and the results are also verified experimentally. Tables and curves of those theoretical distribution functions are also given.
