Abstract

DL-Tryptophan ethyl ester hydrochloride, C13HI6N202.HCI, is triclinic, space group PI̅, with a=15.85, b=8.73, c=5.35Å, α=82.73, β=88.51, γ=106.33°, Z=2. The structure was solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by block-diagonal least-squares calculations to an R of 0.089 for 2012 observed reflexions. The indole ring plane forms an angle of 61.5° with the carboxylate plane. The D and L molecules are linked by N-H···Cl hydrogen bonds around the centre of symmetry. The hydrogen bonds sandwich the molecules into a double-layered system parallel to the bc plane.
