Abstract

Systematic investigations are reported on the isotopic exchange in the cobaltous-cobaltic system using cobalt-60. Ammonia and ethylenediamine were found to be satisfactory quenchers of this fast exchange, even though some zero-time exchange was observed. In the concentration range studied the reaction was found to be of the first order with respect to each reactant. At a high fixed ionic strength (3·1), variation of perchloric acid concentration from 0·25 F to 0·7 F showed an inverse first-order dependence. Possible mechanisms for the exchange are discussed.
