Abstract

Following Mach's exposition, Dr. Pendse has recently pointed out two serious lacunae in the definition and determination of mass. In this paper we show that a more penetrating analysis of Newtonian gravitation on the lines suggested by Mach himself and followed by Einstein, Eddington and Milne, in their respective theories, removes the lacunae. The definition and determination of mass are thus shown to be unambiguous in the classical theory.
