Abstract

The photo-elastic constants of diamonds have been redetermined and are found to be q11=-5·05, q12=+2·15, q44=-2·8×10-14 cm.2 dyne-1 and p11=-0·31, p12=+0·09, p44=-0·12. These lead to a decrease in refractive index when diamond is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure.
