Abstract

This investigation was undertaken with a two-fold objective,a) to fit the high-energy p-p data at low and moderate momentum transfers with an « exact » Regge amplitude and b) to devise a model which could lead to such an amplitude by a crossing relation (s⇌t). A suitable choice of shapes for the Regge parameters α(t) and β(t) in the « exact » amplitude so as to conform to certain standard requirements of analyticity and asymptotic behaviour leads to rather good fits to the observed diffraction structures up to moderate momentum transfers. Next, a model of a Regge-type separable potential through a relativistic Schrödinger equation is constructed and found to give rise to an exact Regge amplitude without any background integral. However, the latter is unsuitable for scattering in the crossed channel, as the crossed amplitude (s⇌t) suffers from lack of proper analytic behaviour. On the other hand, the model admits of a Khuri modification to reproduce proper threshold behaviour in the direct channel, and leads exactly to a Khuri-Jones type amplitude which is fitted to singlet n-p scattering ins and d states.
