Abstract

Complexes formed by ethyl picolinate (EP) with various divalent metal thiocyanates, chlorides, bromides and perchlorates have been prepared and characterized. Ethyl picolinate acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through ring nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen. Complexes with the formula M(EP)2X2 (M=Co, Ni, Cu, Fe or Zn and X=NCS; M=Ni and X=Cl and X=ClO4) have been assigned distorted octahedral structure while data for complexes with the formula M(EP)X2 support either six coordinated polymeric structures (M=Cd and X=Cl, Br or NCS) or tetrahedral structure (M=Hg or Co and X=Cl or Br). Thermogravimetry of M(EP)2(NCS)2 (M=Ni, Fe or Zn) indicates that it decomposes via an intermediate of composition M(EP)(NCS)2 to give the metal oxide.
