Abstract

A series of α-Fe2-xCrxO3 nanocrystals, where 0≤x≤1.66, were produced at room temperature using an inorganic sol-gel approach. Aqueous dispersions of these nanocrystals were used to impregnate amorphous silica matrices and the resulting dried and fired materials were studied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. The spectra of the dried and fired nanocrystals consisted of single doublets which showed that even on firing to 600°C, the nanocrystals retained their superparamagnetic properties, indicating no clustering or agglomeration of the crystallites as occurs in the undispersed material.
