Abstract

The quenching cross section σ of the oxygen molecule for the long lifetime T2 of positron annihilation is computed: σ=3.56×10-16 cm2. This is in fair agreement with the experimental data at low oxygen concentrations. An explanation is offered for the tremendous decrease of quenching cross section for high concentrations, and the need for improved experimental data is pointed out.
