Abstract

A cw-CO2 laser at low powers (5 - 15 W) is used for cutting thin sheets of plastic track detectors with high precision, reproducibility and practically a damage-free edge for the track revelation. Optimum processing parameters and the features of the laser produced cuts are reported. A remarkable outcome is that the track revelation sensitivity of some of the plastics, particularly that of the CR-39 enhances due to its laser treatment.
