Abstract

The waxy matter of the pericarp of Eugenia jambolana was saponified using alcoholic potash. The unsaponifiable matter contained a little sterol and some essential oil. A sparingly soluble potassium salt was produced which yielded a triterpene hydroxy acid. A study of its properties and of its derivatives indicated that it is oleanolic acid. It seems to be the major component of the waxy matter.
