Abstract

Reinterpretation of Diphyllopteris verticillata Srivastava from the Lower Gondwana of India shows that in the seedling stage of Glossopteris, preserved vertically compressed in growth position. The first two seedling leaves are paired, costate, and have reticulate venation; they closely resemble adult leaves of Glossopteris except for their diminutive size. The two cotyledons borne at 90° to the seedling leaves, are opposite, dichotomously divided and have open dichotomous venation. Phylogenetic and palaeocological implications are discussed.
