Abstract

A new method for locating the ionospheric current system associated with solar flares is presented. The method depends on the time of maximum intensity of a geomagnetic flare effect and the enhancement of electron density at the relevant level. It is found that the flare current system is located either at 100–130 km (if one assumes that the flare effect is essentially one of enhancement of the Sq-current) or at 60 km (if it is an independent system).
